Fernando José Velez

IMG_5246Fernando J. Velez (M’93-SM’05) received the Licenciado, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon in 1993, 1996 and 2001, respectively. Since 1995 he has been with the Department of Electromechanical Engineering of Universidade da Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, where he is Assistant Professor and he is also a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações. Fernando was a IEF Marie Curie Research Fellow in King’s College London in 2008/09 (OPTIMOBILE IEF) and a Marie Curie ERG fellow at Universidade da Beira Interior from 2010 until March 2013 (PLANOPTI ERG). He made or makes part of the teams of RACE/MBS, ACTS/SAMBA, COST 259, COST 273, COST 290, IST-SEACORN, IST-UNITE, PLANOPTI, COST 2100, COST IC0902, COST IC0905 “TERRA’, COST IC1004 and INSYSM European projects, he participated or is participating in SEMENTE, SMART-CLOTHING, UBIQUIMESH, NEUF (LTEAdvanced Enhancements using Femtocells), HANDCAD, ECOOP and CREaTION (Cognitive Radio Transceiver Design for Energy Efficient Data Transmission) Portuguese projects, and he was or is the coordinator of six Portuguese projects: SAMURAI, MULTIPLAN, CROSSNET, MobileMAN, OPPORTUNISTIC-CR and PROENERGY-WSN. Prof. Velez has been the coordinator of the WG2 (on Cognitive Radio/Software Defined Radio Coexistence Studies) of COST IC0905 “TERRA”. Prof. Velez has authored two books, thirteen book chapters, 160 papers and communications in international journals and conferences, plus 30 in national conferences, is a senior member of IEEE, IT and Ordem dos Engenheiros (EUREL), and a member of IET. His main research areas are cellular planning tools, traffic from mobility, crosslayer design, spectrum sharing/aggregation, and cost/revenue performance of advanced mobile communication systems.

José Vieira

José Vieira received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1988, from University of Coimbra, Portugal and in 1993 the M. Sc. in Systems and Automation from the same university. In 2000 he received the Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Aveiro University, Portugal and since then he is an Assistant Professor at the same university. In 2004 he founded the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Portuguese section and since 2005 he has been its president.

His main research interests are: digital audio signal processing, ultrasonic location, compressed sensing and software-defined radio.

Pedro Pinho

Pedro Pinho was born in Vale de Cambra, Portugal in 1974. He received the Licenciado and Master’s degrees in electrical and telecommunications engineering, and the Ph. D. degree from the University of Aveiro in 1997, 2000, and 2004 respectively. He is currently a Professor Adjunto at the Department of Electrical Telecommunications and Computers Engineering in Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, in Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, and a Member of the research staff at the Institute for Telecommunications, Aveiro, Portugal from 1997.

His current research interest is in antennas for location systems, reconfigurable antennas and antenna design for passive sensors in non-conventional materials. He has authored or co-authored more than 90 papers in conferences and international journals and 4 book chapters.

João Nuno Matos

João Nuno Matos is a Professor at the Universidade de Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal and a Senior Research Scientist with the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Universidade de Aveiro. He received the licenciado degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering, from Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal, in 1982, the master degree, in electrical engineering, from Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, in 1989, and the doctoral degree, in electrical engineering, from Universidade de Aveiro, in 1995.

From 1982 to 1983 he was with Portugal Telecom Inovação. Since 1983, he collaborates with the Universidade de Aveiro where holds an associated professor position.

His main research interests include smart antennas, wireless power transmission and software-defined radio. He has been a reviewer and author of papers in magazines and conferences. He is the author or co-author of more than 70 journal and international conference papers, a member of IEEE and several conference scientific committees.

Arnaldo Oliveira

Arnaldo Oliveira received the Ph.D. degree on Electrical Engineering in 2007 from the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He also holds the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees, both on Electronics and Telecommunications, from the same university. He is currently a Senior Researcher at Telecommunications Institute – Aveiro. His research interests include reconfigurable digital systems and software defined radio. Since 2001 he teaches digital systems design, software defined radio, computer architecture, programming languages and embedded systems at the University of Aveiro, where he is currently an Assistant Professor. From 1997 to 2010 he worked as a Researcher on embedded systems at the Institute of Electronics Engineering and Telematics of Aveiro, Portugal. He participates in several national and European funded research projects. He is the author or co-author of more than 60 journal and international conference papers, a member of IEEE and several conference scientific committees.
