LIRAe - Linux for Radio Astronomy embedded; version 0.10. Logo by Luis Cupido !
LIRAE - Constellation; The Summer Triangle, well known for its alpha star, Vega and also for M57, the Ring Nebula, a planetary nebula about .5 light years and about 1500 light years from us.
LIRAe is a microlinux distribution, to run on CPU embedded systems and control radioastronomy digital correlators based on FPGA chips. Main characteristics : * Kernel 2.4.x, based on Red Hat 8.0 Linux. Size - 64 Mb (binary distribution). * includes busybox V.1.5.1 * avoids hard disk writing and includes ramdisk (/var and /tmp --> /dev/ram0) since writing is a slow process on flash disks (see below). * minimum services guaranteed for RA and complex digital cross-correlators I/O control. * Interfaces: Correlator, Ethernet and external microcontroller (ex. antenna coordinate control) * C code added for correlator data acquisition and sample timestamping (received via GNSS/GPS card). * SSH deamon. * deactivated swap area to avoid flash memory writings. Only one ext3 partition. * No X system ! (reduces final distribution size). No gcc compiler, since the chip is not meant for code devel and compilation.
The system was tested and runs on a PC104 from Kontron, model MOPSlcdLX. Characteristics : * AMD 500MHz, extreme low power, fanless. * PC/104plus card for ISA and PCI IO card expansion. * 256 Mb RAM. * chipDISK IDE compatible with flash hard disk (1Gb).
